Live!

It feels good to be back. I’d like to thank Emily for her patience and persistence in keeping this bus moving. At about this time last week, I decided to purchase our official (and my first) domain. We decided to pass on SparklyAPPENDAGE.com and I felt obligated to jazz up our site a little bit. I’ve dubbed myself “Igor” - the band’s crazy webmaster and i use “webmaster” extremely loosely. The site still requires some tidying-up, but I hope the loyal visitors deem it a presentable improvement. *My apologies to Internet Explorer users - the site will be relatively bare-bones and while some may enjoy that more, the real issue at hand is your allegiance to that foolish browser, haha* I won’t take full credit for the design as I’ve brainstormed with Emily in scenarios that prompted inappropriate WWII references. We’ve literally explored the galaxy for site inspiration. If you’re savvy enough, you can find our scrapped design hosted on blogspot and have a laugh. We intend to keep the twin heads though.

I’m being wordy, but I’ve got so much to relay. Back to the music…

We’ve compiled the 10 tracks we want to release. We’re scrutinizing each one with kindness and enthusiasm. Our catalog is larger than we realized and even now, Emily still surfaces vocal takes i’ve never heard.  I still have to prepare the 10 tracks for  iTunes and Amazon mp3. Luckily, mastering tracks involves nil CSS/XHTML.

Keep in mind, this project progresses ‘cause it’s simply so much fun. No song on the album was recorded while we were within a 200 mile radius. It’s been a mutual creative outlet that we’ll be thrilled to share with you.  I love the idea of being able to say, “we’ve had our album drop.” Thanks to the dear ones who have given their valuable support and taken interest. We’ve enabled a commenting system and we’d love to hear from you. There’s more music to come.

This past weekend I cheerfully plugged Sparkly Fin at every function I went to (and now my voice is gone). We want to express how much we deeply appreciate the enthusiastic support from everyone. It means the world to us, thanks thanks thank you very much! =) -Emily 08 December 2008

Cheer up, sweetheart!

Cheer up, sweetheart
You’ve got a lot on your plate

Brand-spankin’ new
Ugly and beautiful, too
These things we face
Are just hard to accept
So cheer up, sweetheart
You’re gonna make it today

It’s hard to face you*
When you’re ugly and beautiful too
It’s hard to face you
When you’re newer than new
I suggest you forget it today
So cheer up, sweetheart
You’re gonna make it today
You’re gonna make it okay

The avant garde is harsh
On our eyes and our ears
But if you open your mind
You might face a valuable find

[Flash 9 is required to listen to audio.]

Wow, I found this treasure the other day while sifting through my library of Joseph’s instrumentals. Writing about ice cream is such an innocent undertaking but then when you sing about it, it totally changes the original feeling :( HENCE!- Kelis’ “Milkshake” song. This was a sketch in early summer when I really wanted ice cream, simple as that!

We’ve been busy bees all week working on a new site and QC-ing the tracklist. The release date will soon be released! In the meantime, keep listening to our tunes via myspace and spreading the word about Sparkly Fin! Thank you for everything! -Emily

In an attempt to describe Sparkly Fin, it:
smells like freshly baked Majorcan ensaïmadas! feels like slippery whale blubber! tastes like tart blueberries… sounds like a pinball machine from outerspace!! looks like lisa frank ballerina bunnies!
I’m sure that helped your dilemma a great deal and if not, at least the visual helped dislodge your indigestion!! -Emily 01 December 2008

Giving thanks, not spanks.

early 2007 session

Thanksgiving 2008 is wrapped up in our refrigerators and and i’ve escaped the break (and the onset of post-nasal drip) without watching Bolt. Bueno. It’s an appropriate occasion to express gratitude for people and things pertaining to Sparkly Fin so honk!-honk! Here we go!

Thanks:

Monica, for introducing me to Emily

Emily, for putting up with me and continuing to inspire our music with your heart, voice, and mind

Apple Inc., for bundling GarageBand with PowerBooks

Mikey A., for coaxing me into purchasing recording equipment and patiently troubleshooting the gear

Charles Shaw

Fung Wah, for making live recording sessions possible

Ashford & Simpson, for properly recording a music video

Madison & Elise, for being bundles of joy

Elmo, for hugging us

Earth, for appreciating our tiny carbon footprint

Emily, for cranking out “Cheer Up!” *tentatively titled

Style-freein’

Gmail, for backing up our correspondence and backing up our track titles and filenames

Free Willy Theme, for getting me through a tough time

Magoo, the bird is the word

You, for taking the time to see or hear what we do in Sparkly Fin

There’s always something to be thankful for. If you can, don’t hesitate to hug it or tell it that its appreciated. Do that and our world will keep on spinning. Enough sappiness for now, the final tracklist is nearly confirmed. MmHmm.

An Introduction:

To give you guys the rundown on Sparkly Fin, we are a band of two very lucky people. About a year ago this time, our first songs were born and we’ve been making music steadily ever since.

I often tell people we are inspired by anything and everything- such as classmates from Transylvania to silly details of current pop culture like M.I.A.’s chorus of gunshots and/or the Hudgester’s “Sneaker Night” music video and always, major motifs of our parents’ musical tastes such as the soothing sounds of Motown to kickass 70’s rock.

Oftentimes our songs are odes to Timbaland & Aaliyah as a duo, Radiohead, Sade, George Michaels, Babyface and other unforgettable legends, but I must not digress. Somehow, it’s not quite figured out yet, but we have always had an amazing synergy when it comes to the recording process. Attempting highly experimental sounds while still pleasing the ear has been a consistent goal of ours. Discussing current musical and visual influences, the day’s weather, memories of trips to the Phillipines and other randomness, we seem to feed off the energy of those conversations and create stuff we love love LOVE.

We are proud of our everpresent pop sound and also our differentiation from it. As long as I have ears to hear and vocal chords to strike, I will be singing the melodies! And I know as long as Joseph has fingers and ears and a heartbeat- he will be making the beats and layin the tracks.

Thanks again to those in California, Maryland, Massachussetts and New York for hitting us up. We are infinitely thankful for your love and attention :D

-Emily Lange
